Summary:
It all started in 7th grade when I was undecided what to do for a sport in the spring. I decided to try track considering that my sister did it and my Dad was an amazing track athlete in high school.
I found that I was pretty good. After a few years on the middle school team, I broke the shotput record with a toss of 40'9''. I took the challenge of the high school team in 9th grade and loved it. I participated in the 100m dash, shotput, discus, and the 4 X 100m relay.
Although my team as a whole was not successful, I enjoyed the individual success that my friends and I had. My most memorable moment was my senior year. It came down to the last meet of the season, the last event of the meet, and the second to last leg of the 4 x 100m relay. We were just behind after our second leg was approaching me for the handoff. I knew that if I didn't push myself as hard as I could, I would never know the feeling of a dual meet win in my high school career.
I took the baton and booked! My opponent had no idea I was as fast as I was. I had a clean handoff to the anchor and we won our very first meet. With a tear in my eye, I had the taste of victory.
I came back one year later to assist my old high school team and was later offered an assistant position. I stayed at East Islip for a few years and then moved on. I became an assistant coach at Islip HS under the direction of Mike Reilly. I learned so much and was granted the amazing opportunity to take over the program.
So now, 7 years deep in the program, and I love it more now than I ever did.
